Paul Bissonnette, a former NHL player and current hockey announcer, was the “victim of an assault” during an altercation at a restaurant in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Sunday.

According to police, Bissonnette was attacked while trying to break up a fight between six men and management at a Houston restaurant.

“The situation escalated and Paul Bissonnette was assaulted by men inside and outside the restaurant,” the Scottsdale Police Department told CNN on Tuesday.

“Police responded quickly to the report and after a thorough investigation, six men were arrested in connection with the incident.”

“First responders were called to the scene to assess Paul’s injuries and he was transported to the hospital for further evaluation.”

“Six suspects have been arrested and booked and face charges related to assault and disorderly conduct,” police said.

In a video posted to social media on Monday, Bissonnette thanked fans for their support and shared details of the altercation.

“I went to a restaurant called Houston’s for dinner. I go there three or four times a week. It’s got a great staff, great food, just great people, I love going there, and the bar where I usually sit was packed,” the former hockey player said.

Bissonnette said he noticed a “commotion” going on at the bar, so he walked over and saw a man getting in front of the manager and physically assaulting him.

“It’s a family restaurant, and I didn’t think there was anyone inside that could help him. So I walked over and grabbed the man’s arm. I said, ‘Sir, if you continue to harass and assault the staff, we’re going to be in trouble,’ and then they started throwing things.”

The 39-year-old said the incident then quickly escalated and he believes he got into a fight with seven men outside the restaurant and across the street.

“I just felt like I had to go over there, yeah, so took some, gave more,” the broadcaster concluded.

Bissonnette detailed how he was thrown to the ground, kicked twice in the head and once in the neck in a Tuesday episode of his “Spittin’ Chiclets” podcast.

“Biz” added that the fight ended when he walked into a CVS across from the restaurant, having lost his shoes and shirt in the fight.

He thanked first responders for their quick response and help, adding that he was “a little hurt” but more shaken.

Bissonnette played 202 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Phoenix Coyotes from 2008 to 2014.
