The Oroqen people are one of the smallest ethnic minorities in Northeast my country and the only nomadic ethnic group in China. The most traditional Oroqen people in China still remain on the far edge of the Heihe River. However, at the time of statistics in 2010, the entire Oroqen people were not yet to 10,000 people. They have been hunting in the forests of Daxing’an Mountains for generations. They are all powerful and capable, good at riding and shooting, and are known as the “nation on horseback.”
Hunting is the survival need of the Oroqen people, and they hunt in the vast forest all year round. Hunting horses and hunting dogs are indispensable helpers for the Oroqen hunters, so they are also their closest partners. The Oroqen people’s hunting horses and dogs are very humane. For this special reason, the Oroqen people generally do not kill horses and dogs, nor eat horse and dog meat.
