The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will honor multiple cultures within our community at the 2nd Annual Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage (AANHPI) Month commemorative event on Tuesday, May 14, at 9:30 a.m. This special event will take place in the Board Chambers at 1025 Escobar Street in Martinez. Community members are invited to join the celebration in person or live on Contra Costa Television channels and the County website. Live interpretations will be available via Zoom in Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Khmer, Japanese, Spanish, and American Sign Language. “We are proud to recognize the history, achievements, struggles, cultures, languages, and numerous contributions of all AANHPI community members in Contra Costa County,” said Board Chair Federal Glover (Supervisor, District 5). “Contra Costa County is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access, and this event enables us to celebrate how our various backgrounds and histories enrich the lives of all county residents.” This year’s theme is Building on Our Legacies, emphasizing how cultural heritages and lived experiences influence who we are today, and provide an opportunity for younger and future generations to carry on their AANHPI legacies. The multi-media event will feature stories of Contra Costa County residents including Sonnara Sen, who is of Cambodian heritage and was born in a refugee camp in the Philippines before coming to the United States; and Eizo Kobayashi, a U.S. citizen who, at 10 years old, was interned with his family at the Topaz Relocation Center in Utah. It will also include live performances representing traditions from Japanese, Filipino, Cambodian, Chinese, and other AANHPI cultures. In addition, youth will talk about connecting to their heritages through dance, and city leaders will share how they are building on their legacies through public service. To learn more about the County’s 2024 AANHPI celebration and access language interpretations, visit the AANHPI page on the Contra Costa County website. Community members may view the event live at ContraCostaTV.org or on Contra Costa Television (CCTV) channels: Comcast Cable 27, ATT-U-verse 99, and Astound 32 & 1027. View the 2024 program.
