According to officials at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, at least 13 people, including seven children, were killed and 25 others were injured in an attack on the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza on Tuesday.
Exclusive video footage obtained by a reporter from eyewitness Nihad Oweidara revealed the horrific scene, with multiple victims, including children, scattered on the ground and blood streaming everywhere.
In the video, dozens of people were seen panicking and running in all directions, screaming as they tried to count and carry away the bodies. Amidst the chaos, a dusty table football table could be seen, a reminder of the innocent games the children had been playing before the tragedy.
Oweidara, a resident of the refugee camp, told the reporter that he heard an explosion around 3:40 pm local time on Tuesday, approximately 30 to 40 meters away from where he was. Upon approaching the scene, he witnessed the devastating sight of bodies strewn across the ground. People and children were screaming, and among the dead were children who had just been playing table football.
Footage inside the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital showed a constant influx of injured individuals being brought in. The emergency room was overcrowded with patients, including several injured children lying on the floor and crying loudly. Family members gathered around the bodies of their loved ones, kissing, hugging, and weeping.
Inside the hospital morgue, families were trying to identify their loved ones among the deceased. Fatmeh Issa pointed at a white body bag revealing the bloodied face of a young boy and told the reporter, “This is my son.”
Another man cried out in anguish, “They are civilians, they have nothing to do with anyone! Have mercy on us. You are killing innocent children, not soldiers or fighters. These children were just playing peacefully in the street.”
The video showed him handing the body of a young girl to another man, both of them reciting verses from the Quran and weeping. The man who received the body gently placed her on the ground, covered her with a jacket, and told the reporter that she was his daughter.
“This is my eldest daughter…her name is Lujain, and she is nine years old. They were playing in the street when they were attacked. They are all just children,” he added.
Outside the hospital yard, people looked distraught, with women in particular rushing inside the hospital, crying out for their loved ones. Dozens of people gathered in the yard to pray for the deceased before they were taken for burial.
