On the evening of March 11, local time, high-level delegations from the United States and Ukraine issued a joint statement after the talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The statement said that Ukraine is willing to accept the US proposal for an immediate 30-day temporary ceasefire, which can be extended with the consent of both parties, but must be accepted and implemented by Russia at the same time. At the same time, the US will immediately lift the suspension of intelligence sharing and provide security assistance to Ukraine.
The consensus reached by the United States and Ukraine this time stems from a series of previous events. On February 28, Ukrainian President Zelensky visited the White House to meet with Trump. The two sides had a fierce quarrel over not signing an agreement for Ukraine to provide the United States with mining rights for mineral resources. Subsequently, the United States suspended military assistance and intelligence sharing to Ukraine in order to put pressure on Ukraine to sign the US-Ukraine mineral agreement and hold peace talks with Russia. Ukraine agreed to the US ceasefire proposal under the pressure of weapons and manpower shortages.
In addition, the US and Ukrainian delegations also discussed the importance of humanitarian efforts as part of the peace process, including the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of detained civilians, and the return of displaced Ukrainian children. The two delegations agreed to determine the composition of the negotiation team and start negotiations immediately to achieve lasting peace and ensure Ukraine’s long-term security. At the same time, the two presidents agreed to reach a comprehensive agreement on the development of Ukraine’s key mineral resources as soon as possible to strengthen Ukraine’s economy and ensure Ukraine’s long-term prosperity and security.
US President Trump expressed hope that Russia would also accept the 30-day ceasefire proposal, and he may call Russian President Putin this week. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova said on the 11th that Russia does not rule out contact with US representatives in the next few days. However, Konstantin Kosachev, deputy chairman of the Russian Federation Council, said on the 12th that any agreement on Ukraine should be based on Russian conditions, and “the real agreement is determined by the battlefield.”
